The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS) proudly joins the global community in commemorating World Maritime Day 2025. This year’s theme, “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity”, resonates deeply with the Caribbean Community, where the sea is the very essence of our identity, culture and livelihood.

“Our Ocean” is the heart of the Caribbean. It connects our island nations, fuels our economies and sustains countless communities through tourism, fishing and trade. For us, the ocean is not just a border, it is a shared space that demands our collective stewardship.

With this privilege comes “Our Obligation”. We have a solemn duty to protect our vital maritime domain from complex and evolving threats. The trafficking of illicit drugs and weapons, illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing, and other transnational crimes pose a direct threat to our security and stability. CARICOM IMPACS is unwavering in its commitment to fulfilling this obligation, working tirelessly with Member States and international partners to enhance maritime domain awareness and bolster our collective defenses against these dangers.

In securing our waters, we unlock “Our Opportunity”, for a prosperous and sustainable future. A safe and secure maritime environment is the foundation of the Caribbean’s blue economy. It allows for the safe passage of goods, the growth of our tourism sector and the sustainable management of our marine resources. It transforms our shared ocean from a vulnerability into a wellspring of potential for generations to come.

On this World Maritime Day, we salute the seafarers, coast guards, port authorities and all maritime professionals who stand on the front lines. Your courage and dedication are integral to fulfilling our obligation and seizing the opportunities our ocean presents. Let us continue to work together to ensure a secure and prosperous CARICOM for all.
