CARICOM IMPACS enhances Firearms Forensic capacity of Sint Maarten Police Force
13 June 2025
Following a special three-day training on innovative forensic analysis, the Sint Maarten Police is now better equipped to tackle firearm crime.
The training, which was held from 2 to 6 June 2025, was conducted by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS) in collaboration with the College of Police Chiefs, the Sint Maarten Police Force and the Trinidad and Tobago Forensic Science Centre (TTFSC).
Six forensic investigators participated in this training including two from the Curaçao Police Force, two from the Aruba Police Force, and two from the Sint Maarten Police Force. The objective of the training was to build the participants’ capacity in advanced forensic analysis to handle firearm-related crimes in a faster and more effective manner. All participants successfully completed the training.
Speaking at the certificate distribution ceremony, Mr. Carl John, Chief of Police, Sint Maarten, stated that the partnership between CARICOM IMPACS and the College of Police Chiefs was already yielding results through initiatives such as this training. He added that in addition to capacity building, Sint Maarten was also benefitting from the exchange of information on criminals who were traversing the Caribbean Region to commit crimes. “The Caribbean is no longer a safe haven for criminals,” he noted.
Mr. John added that Sint Maarten Police was already poised to strengthen its collaboration with CARICOM IMPACS with initiatives such as the third regional network meeting for crime analysts, which will be held later this year. “With this intensive collaboration, the Region is taking an important step towards a safer Caribbean,” he assured.
